In 1853, the New York State Legislature authorized the creation of a park in the center of Manhattan. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, two young landscape architects, won a design competition for the park in 1858. They envisioned a park that would offer a diverse array of recreational opportunities, including walking paths, lakes, open meadows, and wooded areas.
