Black history in New York City is a rich and complex tapestry that spans over 400 years. Black people have been an integral part of the city’s history since its founding in 1624. From the early days of slavery, through the abolitionist movement and the Civil War, to the Harlem Renaissance and the Civil Rights movement, Black New Yorkers have made significant contributions to the city’s culture, politics, and economy. Some notable figures include Alexander Hamilton, who was born in the West Indies and lived in New York City for much of his life, and Shirley Chisholm, who in 1968 became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress. Today, Black New Yorkers continue to shape the city through their activism, art, and entrepreneurship. For more information on booking a Black History in NYC Experience
