The Bronx Museum Presents: FUTURA 2000 BREAKING OUT

February 10 @ 8:00 AM - July 7 @ 5:00 PM

The Bronx Museum of the Arts proudly presents FUTURA 2000: BREAKING OUT, a retrospective that traces the evolution of this iconic artist from his roots in graffiti to his mastery of contemporary abstraction. This exhibition, the most comprehensive exploration of FUTURA 2000’s five-decade career, will be on view in his hometown of New York City from Sunday, September 8 through winter 2025. BREAKING OUT showcases a diverse range of his work, including sculptures, drawings, prints, studies, collaborations, and archival materials spanning from the 1970s to today. The exhibition will also feature new site-specific installations.

Known for his fascination with science fiction and the space age, FUTURA 2000 has incorporated cutting-edge technology and video gaming into his artistic practice. His spray paint technique—precise and sophisticated—creates abstract, cosmic compositions on canvas, blending refined lines with vibrant bursts of color and gestural brushstrokes. His recurring motifs, such as the atom symbol representing perpetual motion, linear marks symbolizing rupture, and his enigmatic Pointman figure, evoke the vastness of outer space and an otherworldly presence.

“FUTURA 2000’s distinctive visual language, merging street art, abstract expressionism, and fashion, positions him alongside peers like Jean-Michel Basquiat in the art historical canon,” says Klaudio Rodriguez, Executive Director of The Bronx Museum. “We are thrilled to present this iteration of BREAKING OUT, which will resonate deeply with our audiences in The Bronx and beyond.”
