Black Cowboys: An American Story

Dive into the heartwarming tales of Black Cowboys: An American Story, a journey through the lives and achievements of the countless Black men, women, and children—both enslaved and free—who worked tirelessly on the Texas ranches and joined cattle drives from the period before the Civil War up to the early 20th century.

This enchanting exhibition brings to life the skills and contributions of Black cowboys through a rich collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents. Black Cowboys: An American Story sheds light on the legendary figures who shaped the Black West, offering a more inclusive and vibrant story of the American West.

Step into a world where you can meet the real Black cowboys who made a profound mark on American history. Discover their incredible skills in horse taming, livestock care, and their adventures herding cattle across the vast landscapes of America.

Organized with love by the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas (wittemuseum.org), and supported wholeheartedly by Bank of America, the Ed Rachal Foundation, the John L. Santikos Charitable Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation, and H-E-B, this exhibition is a heartfelt tribute to these heroes. At the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, Black Cowboys: An American Story is further embraced by the Fund to Advance Racial Equity at the North Texas Community Foundation and Principal, ensuring the legacy and stories of Black cowboys are celebrated and remembered.
