Maison Vitry, Tremé District
N. Prieur St. & Dumaine St.
New Orleans, LA 70116
504-298-8553
While not Black-owned, this American Style side-hall town house was built in 1855 for Free Woman of Color, Louise Arsene Vitry. The building itself was also featured in “American Horror Story: Coven,” when it was used as the site for Marie Laveau’s hair salon. Rentals are available for the entire house, which sleeps up to 7. In the historic Tremé neighborhood, you are within walking distance to 3 Black-owned museums, the French Quarter, and the Tremé Center. With a fascinating history that opens a window into the relationships between some Free Women of Color and the Frenchmen with whom they consorted, this space is not only a cultural epicenter of the nation, but offers a quintessentially New Orleans ambience.
This list is by no means exhaustive, though it was admittedly a bit more challenging to compile than some of the others we offer. Black-owned real estate is at an all-time low in the city. The gentrification of Tremé, lauded as the oldest Black neighborhood in the nation, has been one of the biggest blows to New Orleans’ culture-bearers. What was once an over 60% Black owned neighborhood by 1810, is now almost 70% Airbnbs, not owned by POC.
This fact is often highlighted during festivals, such as Jazz Fest and Mardi Gras, through the flyers created by some of the original owners of the properties in Tremé. These flyers are often hand-written, informing those staying in the Airbnb’s that they are actively participating in the displacement of the rightful owners of those structures. This makes it challenging at best for those more civic-minded to find accommodations in New Orleans that are in alignment with their own philosophies.
We hope the above offerings make your stay in our city both comfortable, and conscience-easing.
